Senior Year College Planning Month by Month

September

  • Use Junior Planning Booklet as a resource guide
  • Make appointment to see your school counselor on college admissions
  • Decide which standardized tests (SAT/ACT) you will take and be sure to meet Deadline (please check the school counseling web page for deadlines)
  • See your counselor IMMEDIATELY if you are planning to apply Early Action or Early Decision
  • Assemble list of schools that interest you
  • Meet with college representatives (Tuesdays) in the School Counseling Office
  • Begin drafts of colleges essays and resumes
  • SAT I - Held at Lyman Hall - See School Calendar for specific date and time

October

  • Visit college Website to familiarize yourself with admissions process
  • See your counselor to discuss your progress
  • Watch the school counseling bulletin board for open house listings and financial aid/scholarship information
  • Contact teachers who may write recommendations for you - this includes your counselor!
  • Plan to attend Financial Aid Night - See School Calendar for specific date, time and location
  • Research sources of private, outside scholarships throughout the year
  • Throughout the year visit a college campus if it is of serious consideration

November

  • Choose colleges and schools to which you will apply
  • Follow ALL directions for submitting applications; note deadlines. Please note that students are responsible for mailing all applications
  • It is a good idea to apply to STATE SCHOOLS by Thanksgiving
  • Notify the school counseling office at least 10 working days before deadlines for transcripts that need to be sent
  • Be sure to notify ETS or ACT to send your scores directly to colleges
  • Speak with graduates who are home for vacation about your college interests

December

  • Read all information about admission process for each school (they differ from school to school)
  • Complete applications and submit transcript request forms at least 10 working days prior to deadline
  • Some schools will have a Secondary Report Form (the Common Application definitely does.) Please be sure to submit a copy of this form with the proper information filled out along with your transcript request form. If you a question about this please ask your counselor, not your friends (they have not done this before either.)
  • Check to see if the government has posted the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Form online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You can begin to fill out the information, however the form cannot be submitted until January 1st.
  • Attend the Financial Aid Night - See School Calendar for specific date, time, and location
  • Notification to Early Decision candidates

January

  • File FAFSA form
  • Continually watch for scholarship information on the School Counseling Scholarship bulletin board inside the counseling office
  • Have mid-year reports sent to colleges
  • Check with your parents' places of employment and clubs for financial aid sources

February

  • Continue to research and apply for local scholarships
  • If future plans are still unclear see your counselor!

March

  • Check that all information requested by each college is filed
  • Be sure that you have applied to and been accepted by at least one school
  • Continue to work hard academically! Your college acceptance is contingent upon successful completion of all senior coursework. COLLEGES HAVE THE RIGHT TO RESCIND YOUR ACCEPTANCE IF YOUR GRADES DECLINE!

April

  • Try to visit colleges before making your final decision
  • Review your college responses and aid offers with your parents and counselor
  • Make your final decision and send deposit by May 1st

May

  • Complete all necessary college forms mailed to you by your selected college
  • Write withdrawal letters to colleges you will not attend
  • AP tests offered

June

  • Graduation
  • Have a great summer!
